[How To] Take and Share a Screenshot

Technical Details

Windows allows you to take a snapshot of what is shown on your computer screen and save it as a file. You can share this image with other people via web pages or email. You may be asking why this is important and why you would want to share screen shots of your computer. Two reasons come to mind, though there are many others:

1. You see a website drastically different than others. You can take and share a screenshot to show your perspective.

2. You did something you find to be really cool or interesting and would like others to be able to see it.

Taking a screen shot

To take a shot of the entire screen, press the PrtSc or PrintScreen button on your keyboard. A copy of your current screen will be placed in the Windows clipboard.

Using the screen shot

Now that a screen shot has been made, we want to paste that screen shot into another Windows program so that we can use it. To save the screenshot as a file, we can paste it into a graphics program such as Paint Shop Pro, PhotoShop or even MS Paint. To email it to another person, we can paste it directly into an email.

Open the desired program and click on Edit -> Paste. The screenshot should appear in the current document. Now you can save the file (File -> Save As) or send your email as usual.

Sharing the screen shot on Photobucket

First, save the file to your hard drive using your favorite graphics program (and remember where you put it!). Once saved as a file, you'll be able to share this image online using Photobucket.

Photobucket is a free service that allows you to upload and share images on your computer so that other people on the Internet can view them. To use Photobucket, register at their site. Once you are a member you should login and you will be presented with the Add Pictures screen.

Browse to the picture you would like to upload and then press the Submit button. Once you submit the picture you will be presented with a screen that shows all the pictures you have uploaded with your account on to Photobucket. Below each picture you will see the words Url, Tag, and Img.

The URL field contains the link you would copy and share via these forums. If you wanted someone to see this image, you would post this link by coping the text in the URL field and pasting that into your message. Visitors to the boards can then click on the link to see your image.

As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask in the help forum.

If you would prefer to capture just the active window instead of your whole screen hold down the 'Alt' key on your keyboard before you hit the 'PrtSc' key. Now only the active window on your screen will be placed on the clipboard - everything else remains the same.
