I'm not sure where my last post ended up, it isn't here anymore, so I am reposting it. I have done some major code rewrite to change the look and feel to my Play by Post site, and would like other webmasters opinions as to how I could make it better.
Shadowrun Online is a Play by Post Shadowrun site. We have a large and growing active community and a new revamped site that is geared at making the gaming experiance better. I am always looking for others opinions at what could make my site better.
I would also like to know what kind of changes it would take to get a Wyrm award. Any advice is welcome.
Hi, Not an editor, as you
Hi,
Not an editor, as you are likely aware, but here is my tuppence, as the owner of a closed game that held a Gold Wyrm
.
Obviously you put a lot of time and attention in this project. With 171 members you gotta be doing something right (are they all active?). Right now however, I do see some room for improvement.
First, I'm not sure about the google add on the frontpage. I personally always find that off-putting. In this case it also makes your buttons to the rest of the site less visible so it directly messes up your navigation.
It would be helpful to have two big buttons at the start:
JOIN HERE (for all new players, should contain all info they need for an application and start playing) and PLAY HERE (to go to the forums). I could only find the forums by clicking latest topics and then I saw the new member's area. But that link could have been on your frontpage, luring interested people in
Minor peeve: your poll contains a spelling mistake.. and it is on the frontpage!
As a side remark that doesn't concern site design: in my experience it is not a good tactic to put on your frontpage repeatedly "Looking for GM's" and "If you only join as players, the GM's will come, trust me". It only tells the potential new player that right now they are not around and it is not worth bothering to sign up. Now, you do not need to hide your ambitions to grow, I would just formulate your desire for new players differently
Ah, a topic for debate in another thread perhaps?
I hope you will take this in the spirit that it is offered in

A couple of comments
Since this wasn't an official review request, I'll just offer a couple of comments. I'm older and your font is TINY. I can read it but I wouldn't want to for very long. I love your graphic at the top and the site, while super-crowded with text and information, is attractive and appealing.
Your navigational tabs under the header are confusing. 'Portal' and 'Home' brought me to the same page... I also wasn't sure what you meant by 'portal'. I didn't do much other checking but if you really want a review for the Gold Wyrm, you need to post all the pertinent info for your editor. If you need help finding the information, I'd be happy to point the way.
Looks like a great site. Good work.

Thank you
Thank you for the advice. As a web designer, I am always looking for ways to improve my designs. The ads are only there until I get back from the middle east, so I can pay for the site without ads when I have a better paying job.
I agree with the spelling errors and removed that poll.
I also agree with the new player area. It is a peave of mine, and i didn't realize how hard it was to find on my site. I am creating a noob page that will be linked on the main page.
Thank you for the advice. I am working on the changes.
I have made some changes, and would like more advice if you see anything else that needs to be fixed.
Thank you all again.
